WHAT ARE INLAYS AND ONLAYS

August 22, 2018

Our dental team works hard to provide patients with the best quality of care and a variety of treatment options. Inlays and onlays are often used for restorative measures in protecting the health of an individual’s mouth. Continue reading to learn more about inlays and onlays and see how they can benefit your smile.

WHAT IS A DENTAL INLAY

An inlay is often used as an alternative for dental fillings. This is the case when there is too much damage for a dental filling, yet not enough for a crown. It is placed on the chewing surface of the tooth located between the cusps. A dental inlay will need to be created for each individual tooth in a lab prior to placement.

WHAT IS A DENTAL ONLAY

A dental onlay may be needed for more severe damage. It is larger than a filling, yet still smaller than a crown. It is one effective method in saving the tooth from total damage while still strengthening the structure. Both inlays and onlays are typically made from porcelain or composite resin materials.

HOW INLAYS AND ONLAYS ARE PLACED

Inlays and onlays will require more than one visit to your dentist office. To begin, the dentist will prepare the affected tooth by removing all signs of decay and taking molds and impressions that will then be sent to a lab. A temporary restoration will be placed for protection during the waiting period. The second visit involves cleaning the area and placing the final restoration while making sure the color and size is a perfect match.
