Have you heard of Periodontitis? Ever wondered what type of gum diseases are there its treatment? Here’s all you must know about the disease:
Periodontitis is a common gum disease which affects the gums and deeper periodontal structure. It’s marked by inflammation, redness, swelling, and bleeding during brushing. It’s caused by certain bacteria and the inflammation triggered by these bacteria.
Bacteria are already present in your mouth but they cause harm when they increase massively in numbers. The bacteria increase when plaque from mouth is not removed for a longer duration especially between the teeth.
Periodontitis is often signified by the inflammation and bleeding of the gums while brushing. The gums appear red and swollen and there is layer of discolored bacterial plaque on teeth.
Our mouth has as many as 700 species of bacteria which are harmless but the issue arises when lack of dental hygiene leads the bacteria to multiply at an alarming rate. Their buildup makes a layer of plaque on gums where more bacteria flourish.
If the soft bacterial plaque is not removed in time, because of mineral deposit over time, it becomes hard tartar. It encourages growth of plaque near the roots which causes a gap that is filled with bacteria.
For preventing the periodontal disease it is important to maintain proper oral hygiene routine by brushing and flossing. The areas where toothbrush can’t reach can be cleaned by dental floss. Also, you must visit the dentist every few month for dental examination as well cleaning.
Periodontitis has been found to be the root cause of tooth loss in people. If the progress of gum disease is not stopped, it can damage the structure of the teeth along with the bone. You will finally lose the teeth or would require an extraction. Pain abscess is another painful problem experienced along with drifting teeth and exposure of roots. It can also increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes and lead to complications during pregnancy.
